Every once and awhile I'll go over some really old computer games that I used to play a lot. Unfortunately, there are quite a few that I haven't played much recently, so I'll have to play them quite a bit (which takes time).
Anyway, I'm starting off with Jewel Thief. First, some basic information.
Game Name: Jewel Thief
Creator: Paul Ligeski
Release Date: 1991
Original Platform: Windows 3.1
This game was released as part of a Fun Pack with other Windows games by Way Forward Technologies. As far as I know, the game runs perfectly fine in Windows 95-XP (and possibly Vista as well). However, at least in high-color display modes, many of the enemies appear nearly invisible (making the game more challenging). This can typically be fixed by changing to a 256 color display mode. I also believe the movement of the enemies is a little faster on faster computers.
The game's basic "story" is that the jewels from the National Museum have been stolen, and the main player character is sent out to retrieve them.
The gameplay is pretty simple. The main player character is controlled by the mouse. In each level, there are jewels scattered about the screen. There are also constantly moving enemies in each level. The object is to collect all of the jewels in a level (then you can move onto the next level). Each jewel you collect (by moving your character over the jewels) gives you points. If an enemy hits you (or you move off the screen), you lose a life. You start with 9 lives, and you can gain more (with a maximum of 9) by getting 30000 points.
While the gameplay is simple, the game is very challenging and fun. As you move through levels, there is some combination of more jewels, more enemies, or faster enemies. In fact, I don't believe I've ever completely beaten this game.
